Xanga Slacker

In the words of one of my Chinese friends, "I have to hang my head." I have become a xanga slacker. The upside is that there's a quasi-direct correlation between my being a xanga slacker and my not being a slacker in supposedly more important things like my summer job and my final project from from my Bibliography and Research Methods class (which I left incomplete at the end of the spring semester, which overlapped with the beginning of the summer job).

It would be overwhelming to try to post everything that's happened in the nearly two months since I last posted, and I'm pretty sure I would lose from boredom the few faithful readers I have not driven away with my infrequent posting and my drivel about deadly lettuce. Instead, I'll break out the bullet points for a quick, incomplete summary. Hoo-ah!
  • Taught lots and lots of reading classes this summer, and mostly liked it.
  • Drove lots and lots of miles this summer, and mostly got paid $.40 per mile for it.
  • My beloved moved to Baton Rouge and started a new job teaching high school English at a private school. She has been like super-woman adjusting to all the newness of a new home, a new city, a new job, etc. while experiencing re-entry to the U.S.
  • Had coffee with the wonderful Karen Youmans.
  • Had an excellent birthday. (It was actually the day Amanda moved to B.R.!) Birthday made more excellent by receiving a cappucino/espresso maker from my woman.
  • Read Blue Like Jazz (also a birthday gift from Amanda), more Wendell Berry, Non-Violent Communication, a marriage book, and the poetry of Li-Young Lee. All good.
That's enough for now. I should be making a syllabus right now.

Here are some pics of Cinco de Moustache, which I promised to post and didn't:

The prizewinners, from L to R: Eric (Bushiest 'Stache), me (Most Original 'Stache), Rich (Sparsest 'Stache), Matt (Best Overall). Keep in mind, these were all one month of growth (with the exception of Matt, who was a last-minute entry).

Quote of the Day

A question that has likely never crossed your mind:

"Who would think that you could eat lettuce and almost die?"

Beware the deadly lettuce! All joking aside, this story of E.coli being carried in bagged salad mixes is somewhat unsettling for someone who buys bagged spinach to top his sandwiches. But it's so daggum convenient!

Xanga poll: Should I (and you?) stop buying bagged baby spinach due to the danger of E.coli contamination?

Pictures, as Promised

Wouldn't you know my computer would keel over and play dead as soon as I got back to Baton Rouge...but, finally the charade is over, Lappy is up and running, and I am posting pictures of Amanda and me on the day we got engaged. For the many who have asked, the big day will be December 30th!

BIG NEWS!

I am engaged! My fiancee, Amanda, returned from China last Friday night. I proposed on Sunday, and she said yes! We are very excited about our future together, and I wanted to share the happy news with my faithful xanga readers. I'll post some pics when I get back to Baton Rouge!

NO MORE PAPERS!!

Until next semester, anyway.

My woman comes home in 9 days.

If any friends will be in Houston in the next 3 weeks, let me know.  I'm training for my prestigious summer teaching job.
